Before you go

• Coverage across the mainland and the major islands is good, including Sicily and Sardinia. The thin spots are inland Apennine valleys and the smaller Aeolian islands, where any network struggles.
• Rome, Florence and Venice all have heavy tourist crowding in summer, and cell sites near the main sights get congested in the middle of the day. That's load, not your eSIM.
• Trains between cities lose signal in the long tunnels on the Bologna–Florence stretch. Download your tickets rather than relying on pulling them up en route.
• These are data-only plans. They don't come with a local phone number, and they don't carry calls or texts, so keep your normal SIM switched on for those and let the eSIM handle data.
• The plan starts when it first connects to a network at your destination, not when you buy it. Buy it weeks ahead if you like; the clock starts when you land.
• Install it before you fly, over your home Wi-Fi. Installing needs an internet connection, which is the one thing you won't have at the airport.
• Don't delete an eSIM to make room for another one. An activation code only works once, and your phone can hold several profiles side by side.

Will an Italy eSIM work in Vatican City and San Marino?

Vatican City is surrounded by Rome and is served by the same Italian networks, so yes. San Marino is a separate country with its own operator and is not covered by an Italy-only plan, so pick a Europe regional plan if your route includes it.

How much data do I need for a week in Italy?

Maps, messaging and the occasional photo upload runs most travellers about 500 MB to 1 GB a day. 5 GB covers a typical week comfortably; 10 GB if you stream or tether a laptop.

Can I use it on a ferry to Sicily or Sardinia?

Near the coast, usually. Mid-crossing you'll drop out, because ferries are well outside land network range, and maritime signal is a different service that no travel eSIM covers.
