Before you go

• Turkey registers foreign handsets by IMEI. The rule applies to phones used with a Turkish SIM card beyond a set period. A roaming travel eSIM is a different arrangement, but if you plan to stay for months rather than weeks, read up on the current registration rules before you go.
• Coverage is strong along the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts and through the main cities. Central Anatolia and the far east are thinner, and Cappadocia's valleys have real dead spots between the ridges.
• Istanbul's ferries across the Bosphorus keep signal the whole way. It's a short crossing well inside city coverage.
• These are data-only plans. They don't come with a local phone number, and they don't carry calls or texts, so keep your normal SIM switched on for those and let the eSIM handle data.
• The plan starts when it first connects to a network at your destination, not when you buy it. Buy it weeks ahead if you like; the clock starts when you land.
• Install it before you fly, over your home Wi-Fi. Installing needs an internet connection, which is the one thing you won't have at the airport.
• Don't delete an eSIM to make room for another one. An activation code only works once, and your phone can hold several profiles side by side.

Does a Turkey eSIM cover both the European and Asian sides of Istanbul?

Yes. It's one country and one network footprint, so crossing the Bosphorus changes nothing about your data.

Are WhatsApp and other messaging apps usable in Turkey?

Messaging works normally. Turkey has restricted individual services at various points in the past, so if something specific is unreachable it is far more likely to be a national block than a fault with your eSIM.

How much data for a two-week trip?

10 GB is the usual sweet spot for two weeks of maps, messaging and photo backup. Drop to 5 GB if you're mostly on hotel Wi-Fi.
